The day is breaking. The first rays of the sun are beginning to warm the vineyard, the breeze rustling through its tendrils to the murmur of the Esgueva River, winding its way to the very heart of Castile, this infinite, harsh, austere land. The new day brings the rebirth of colours, aromas and flavours to forge the pride of a people.

This is the awakening of a dream.

soul
A unique, singular spot, the cradle of great wines.
In the vastness of a bleak plateau stretching out as far as the eye can see, the passing of time and the river have created a unique, singular spot, the slopes of "Cuesta Roa", chiselled in the limestone earth rising over the Esgueva valley, custodian of the soul of great wines.

"La Ribera",
heart of the Duero River.

The "Ribera" (riverbank) stretches over a strip of land parallel to the Duero River, 115 kilometres long, crossing the provinces of Soria, Segovia, Burgos and Valladolid, although the latter two make up almost 94% of the territory comprising the Designation of Origin ("D.O.")

The area has a harsh continental-like climate, with an Atlantic influence, very severe winters and summers and scarce rainfall, the annual average not exceeding 500 mm, mainly in spring and fall.

There are a great variety of mesoclimates and soil types within the Designation of Origin area, so each of the different regions it is made up of, such as El Burgo de Osma, Aranda, Peñafiel, Roa, Pesquera, Quintanilla and the Esgueva area, produces wines with their own distinct personality.

The Esgueva,
a river that defies time.

The Esgueva River forms part of the Duero Basin and flows through the northernmost part of the area comprising the Designation of Origin. The valley formed by the river traces its course to its mouth, whose main distinctive feature is that it is situated an average of 100 m higher than the Duero River in its major winegrowing area. (Peñafiel-Pesquera: 740 m; Valbuena-Quintanilla: 730 m; Tórtoles de Esgueva: 830 m.)

This double geographic factor, a higher altitude and the northernmost latitude, together bring about other soil and cultural factors, lending a very pronounced personality to the wines from these soils – elegant, fresh and longlasting.

"Tinto fino",
the flavour of nobility.

"Tinto fino" is how the variety "Tempranillo" is referred to in Ribera del Duero. A very early grape, it usually has a cycle of various weeks shorter than the majority of other varieties.

In such a harsh, complex area as this, this shortening of its biological cycle leads to great damages in the event of spring frost appearing. This is probably the greatest enemy of the vine in this region.

It is a variety with great potential and able to yield wines with an intense aftertaste and complexity. It has been referred to as the noblest grape in Spain. All our wines are made of 100% "Tinto fino".

Pagos

At present the Fiel family possesses 25 hectares of vineyard, of which 22 are in production. They are situated in the Burgos Region called "Tórtoles de Esgueva", the northernmost area of Ribera del Duero, at an altitude of over 830 m.

There are 3 different "pagos", clearly distinguished because of their location, orography and soil types, comprising over 90% of their vineyards. Two of them are on slopes at similar altitudes, an average of 900 m, with very limey soil and opposite orientations. The third one has more loamy soil, at an altitude of between 830 m and 850 m. The remaining 10% is made up of small plots spread out within the region, all with similar features to the 3 "pagos" described above.

dedication
The spirit of a family embodied in wine.
Built on the bedrock of a history filled with work, effort and illusion, emerged a family that has been devoted to the growing of the vine for many years. The most profound essence of this family is rooted in the starkness and sobriety found at the highest altitudes of the "Ribera del Duero" region. To them "Cuesta Roa" is much more than a slope, much more than a wine estate and much more than a wine. It is a tangible example of the perfect union between this family, its past, its present and its future.

Striving for excellence.

AWe nurture our striving to improve every day, to grow by learning, to steer clear of mistakes of the past, never to be repeated and embrace the things we did right and live on.

This desire to excel, not settling for something good if there is still room for improvement, is our driving force, our way of facing up to our anxieties, launching our projects and living our lives.

The soul of our land.

We love our land. This is where our roots are buried and our dreams are born. The most profound essence of what we are, is painted with the light of this sky, is impregnated with the flavour of this breeze and is drenched with the wisdom of this land - the feelings and sentiments of a people, folk that moulded customs into traditions, experiences that withstand the test of time. We are proud to spread them throughout the world.

Family spirit

This is our most prized legacy, our inheritance from our elders, which we will pass on to our children: the way we are, the way we feel, the way we live, the passion we feel for what we do.

Each day we work at kindling the desire and illusion to keep the way our family expresses itself, alive for the future.

A Young wine with great character
"Tinto Roble" boasts a great youthful, open spirit, which allows it to fuse together the charm of its fruit with the virtues of the wood with every year that passes.
2013 Vintage.
It might be said that 2013 marked the return to normality of the climate of Ribera del Duero in the Burgos region – at least around the Esgueva, which is where this wine is from.

A continental year with very intense seasons, good spring rainfalls, filling the soil with water reserves and an absence of the feared spring frosts, so characteristic of the area. Temperatures oscillated between 8º below zero in winter and 38º in summer. Day-night temperature variations were very good during summer.

By and large the harvest was clean and healthy, without any trace of diseases. Starting on 8 October, picking was manual and the grapes were packed into 15 kg crates with an average yield of 3,200 kg/ha.

Once harvested, the grapes were refrigerated until vinification time. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentation followed in tanks at a controlled temperature. After the malolactic process had been concluded, the wine was kept in American and French oak until bottling.

A wine with a medium-high robe and a lively, brilliant appearance. It is expressive in the nose, with ripe red fruits predominating over a spicy backdrop with gentle balsamic hints. It is a generous, enveloping wine on the palate, leaving a very fresh, pleasant tannin sensation.

Vendimia Seleccionada

(Selected harvest): The value of balance
"Vendimia Seleccionada" boasts an independent, dynamic style and has the ability to pick up and bring together the qualities of the different plots, obtaining the best balance between expressiveness and delicacy.
"Cosecha 2012"
2012 Harvest.
Following the winter of 2011, with a good growth period of the canopies, along with very low temperatures, typical of the time of the year and the location, the good rainfalls over those three months were an outstanding feature. Spring brought intense rainfalls and by May, daytime temperatures were unusually high and night temperatures quite low, without raising concern.

The summer months turned out to be particularly dry, with good variation between day and night temperatures, resulting in greater quality. Some heavy storms occurred in July, binging along the odd hail cloud, which affected some areas in Ribera del Duero, but not our vines.

In general, the harvest stood out for its high quality, good health and purity, free of all incidents related to diseases. Harvesting started on 1 October, picking was manual and the grapes were packed into 15 kg crates, with an average yield of 3,200 kg/ha.

After harvesting, the grapes went into cold storage until vinification time. Then came the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in tanks at controlled temperatures. After the malolactic process had been concluded, the wine was kept in American and French oak until bottling.

A wine with a medium-high robe and a lively, brilliant appearance. It is elegant in the nose, with ripe red and black fruits predominating over a backdrop of liquorice and spices. This wine is very balanced and silky on the palate with a fine, lingering aftertaste.

"Cuesta Roa 940" is the patriarch and forerunner of an entire family of Ribera del Duero wines. It bears the same name as the estate from whence it comes and where it led to the rebirth of winegrowing traditions and customs of the people that bore testimony to its birth.

Expression of smoothness
"Cuesta Roa 940" has a firm, solid style and with each vintage, it interprets the smoothest and most accessible expression of the harshness and austerity that characterize the highest altitudes of Ribera del Duero.
2012 Vintage.
The making of a great wine in an area as complex and rugged as Ribera del Duero, is always preceded by both natural - therefore absolutely unpredictable - and human factors that, in unison, will allow us to enjoy a truly exciting product when the time comes. The 2012 vintage was one of those occasions on which Nature and Man managed to coexist and give the best of themselves, resulting in fine quality wines.

The winter of 2011 was representative of the kind of continental winter experienced in this area – a very cold, dry time of the year. In January and February temperatures dropped below zero almost every day, reaching -10ºC several times. Spring 2012 brought abundant rainfall in the form of showers and even the odd hailstorm. As far as temperatures go, the total absence of springtime frost, the biggest climatic threat at this time of the year, was noteworthy. The vine went into summer in good health and growing sturdily. Day-night temperature variations were significant.

Picking was manual and the grapes were packed into 15 kg crates, starting on 1 October and going through till the 9th. The average yield of the Cuesta Roa estate was 2,600 kg/ha.

The alcoholic and malolactic fermentation of "Cuesta Roa 940" occurred in stainless steel tanks. The fermentation processes were followed by oxidized ageing for twelve months in American and French oak. It continued ageing in the bottle until its release onto the market in 2015.

A wine with a lively, brilliant appearance and a good medium-high robe. It is very refined and expressive in the nose, evocative of red fruits against a backdrop of cedar and balsamic liquorice nuances. Initially it is smooth on the tongue, becoming extraordinarily round on the palate. It is an exceptionally pleasant, persistent wine with a good capacity for ageing.
